Frequently Asked Questions

Here to help, making your whole process with us a smooth one.

  • What is Sports Therapy and what is a Sports Therapist?
According to the Society of Sports Therapists a Sports Therapist is: “Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. It utilises the principles of sport and exercise science incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work.”
  • Are you physiotherapists?
No, we are not physio's, we are very proud to be specialist university graduated Sports Therapists. We have a very similar; if not broader skill set in comparisons to physio's. Similar to physios, we have attended university and studied human anatomy, injuries and pain. Our speciality and interest however lies in the field of Sports Injuries and returning you to your sport after injury safely and efficiently. We can both injury assess, deliver manual therapy, prescribe and deliver rehabilitation, refer to specialists as and when, and albeit we utilise different societies we are both required to have a regulatory body where we must submit our CPD every year to prove our performing as a competent therapist whilst staying up to date with the most recent research. We're different because we can also programme training sessions to non injured populations to reduce the risk of injury, programme sessions for specific and special populations and have the ability to screen for injury risk. No matter on what Musculoskeletal Therapist you wish to use, we advise to do your research on them to assure they'll be the right fit for you, including qualification, skill set and speciality or interest. Upon graduation, most therapists no matter their qualification have a very similar skill sets, it then up to that individual to further their knowledge and expertise in a field of their interest to then specialise.
  • Do I need to be an athlete to come to The Sports Therapy Clinic?
No you don't, but anyone that trains and works out is an athlete in our book! We’re here to help everyone. Sports Therapists are trained professionals when it comes to working with muscles, bones and joints and everyone has a fair few of those. Although injuries, aches and pains can come from training and partaking in sports and being active we can help those that have slightly more sedentary lifestyles too and maybe help you work towards a more active lifestyle. We offer advice on an individual basis and this is why people choose to come to The Sports Therapy Clinic for the personalised treatment.
  • What is a Sports & Deep Tissue Massage?
Sports Massage is a type of massage to release musculoskeletal discomfort whether it may be from sporting activities, the gym or everyday lifestyle. During the massage different techniques are used to warm up the muscles and increase the blood flow. Sports & Deep Tissue Massage is perfect for facilitating recovery, reducing muscle tension, improving range of movement and flexibility all of which essential for preparing for training, games, events and competitions. It can reinvigorate your whole body and have amazing effects on improving mood. Regular massage treatments at Clinic Sports Therapy also provides you with a chance to regularly consult with university qualified trained medical professionals, who can give you relevant and personalised advice to help you stay healthy and injury free. Upon your first massage session, it is likely that your therapist will do a quick assessment to rule out serious injury or pathology. These sessions are suitable to just about anyone, from professional or recreational athletes to sedentary workers, of all ages.
  • Does a Sports Massage & Deep Tissue Massage need to hurt for it to be beneficial?
Contrary to many beliefs and the age old 'no pain, no gain saying' these massages do not need to hurt for you to gain benefits from the treatment. A certain amount of pressure does need to be applied during the massage to help manipulate the muscles, but there is no need for a therapist to apply too much pressure to the point of pain. Your highly qualified university therapists have the skills, knowledge and experience to delvier the exact and specific massage techniques that you need to get the best results. Our massages, should still be relatively relaxing and we are here to ensure you have an enjoyable experience and come away from your session feeling better for the short and long term.
  • How often should I have a Sports/ Deep Tissue Massage?
The question we get asked the most. And probably the hardest one to answer. We are aware of how important massage is, but we are also aware of the time and money to withstand regular treatments. We recommend this on an individual basis. We always start by asking 'when is your de-load week?'. This would be the best time, your recovery week, the week where your training is a little more chilled out. Now elite athletes may have this scheduled in to their diary. Others may not have this inputted in to their schedule. So let's break it down. If you're training super hard, hard for a particular event or goal we recommend as often as possible. Weekly or maybe biweekly until you reach your goal. If you're ticking along training but with no great intensity or goal but you're still aiming to make progress then we suggest at a minimum every 3 months. Now supposing you're in the middle of the two, we advise every 4 - 6 weeks. This is typically where you would find a 'de-load week'. These weeks are super important, we can't be firing on all cylinders at all times. We're advocates of pushing the body to the max, but then the recovery phase is where the real gains are made. So assure your diet is on point, you're sleeping 7 hours plus, you're managing your stress, you're managing your training load and your de-load weeks and then max your recovery with a massage with us.
  • Can I train the same day of my massage treatment?
Suppose you have used a massage to optimally recover. Then we'd suggest no, you shouldn't train. There are plenty of if's and but's, however generally speaking plan your day, week, month and diary in advance. Hence why we have the option for you to book in advance online, plan and prepare. If you are doing some active recovery, a steady walk, cycle or swim for example this won't damage your recovery process. If you were to go and try and smash some PB's then we'd suggest today is not the day. You may be dehydrated or sore as the day continues after your massage. Optimise your recovery and go again tomorrow or the day after. Sometimes people can feel a little sore after a massage, this is usually because you aren't used to the pressure just yet. So maybe you'll need an extra day of recovery, but on this day keep yourself moving, again via a walk, a swim or steady cycle. However, if you are receiving a sports massage, this is usually a pre event or post event treatment... A pre event sports massage is a fast, not as deep massage to prepare the muscles for movement helping manipulate and raise the muscle temperature quite literally to help to warm them up, this doesn't take away from the need of warming up but can be a great tool, in which instance, yes train and yes go smash your event!
  • What happens during an injury assessment and initial consultation?
Initial consultations are essential for us to understand your injury and reasons behind booking with us. During your appointment your therapist will allow you to explain your reason for booking with and then may prompt the responses they need by asking specific questions about your symptoms, everyday life, activity level and overall goals. Your therapist will then take you through a physical manual assessment, which involves observation of general movements and everyday postures, individual joint movements both with and without our physical assistance, and a range of specific tests to get objective information about your condition. Once your therapist has the information they need at this stage we will discuss what we have found and provide you our personalised advice and recommendations of how we will work together moving forward. This may be through a combination of manual therapy, such as massage, joint manipulation, acupuncture, percussion therapy or heat therapy and or a personalised exercise rehabilitation programme where you will be taught and prescribed exercises in our onsite gym facilities. This is a chance for us to gauge what difficulty level to start the process at, as well as tailor the exercises to your individual goals, preferences, and accessibility to rehabilitation equipment.
